How our innovative insulation materials improve sustainability

With the US now back in the Paris Agreement, climate policy is very much front and center on the agenda for all of the world’s major economies. Here in the UK, key pieces of legislation are coming in in the next decade to support our government’s quest for “net zero” greenhouse gas emissions in 2050. Firstly, by 2025, all new developments will be banned from installing gas boilers. And by 2030, the sale of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles will also be banned.

So, as the UK government put in place sanctions to control (and even stop) the sale of some of the most significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, the relevant industries and their supply chains must double-down on innovation and investment in producing next-generation technologies and solutions.

Elmelin are no different. We’re committed to working with our clients to move with the times and make our contribution towards climate change. Here are just a few ways in which our innovative insulation materials encourage and improve sustainability, both for ourselves and our clients.

Battery insulation solutions

We are doing more and more work with the automotive sector in the field of electric vehicle batteries. Our solutions such as Compression Pads Plus help to extend the useful life cycle of high-energy density lithium-ion batteries. In the long run, this technology can be applied not just to electric vehicle batteries but also to many other applications with large, high density battery packs.

Although EVs are ostensibly better for the environment than ICE vehicles, the environmental impact of their production is still a consideration. Reducing the need for components such as batteries to be replaced could help to reduce this impact. Equally, by working with manufacturers to improve battery technology, effectiveness and performance, we are helping to make EVs a more sustainable and commercially viable product for consumers.

Expanding the life of materials

We continually work to push the boundaries of what’s possible with mica – a material we’ve used to create insulation solutions for over a century. Already a material with superior thermal and electrical properties, we find innovative ways to use and combine mica with other materials to improve its performance.

By installing high performance insulation, we are able to extend the life of materials used in high temperature and high voltage applications, reducing the need for maintenance and replacement. This in turn reduces the environmental impact involved with producing replacement materials as well as cutting down on waste.

Sustainable mica sourcing

Working with the Responsible Mica Initiative, we are committed to understanding and reducing the environmental impact of mining mica. The Responsible Mica framework supports completely sustainable mica sourcing in regions where the local economy depends heavily on mica.

Through better understanding of our supply chain, we can ensure that the impact of our manufacturing process on the environment is as minimal as possible. It’s of paramount importance to us that we have a full understanding of the social and environmental impact of our operations if we’re going to be able to achieve our vision of being at the forefront of truly sustainable and innovative insulation products.
