Mica Insulation Sheet Specification

Mica sheets are available in two main mineral types: Muscovite and Phlogopite. Depending on your application, we can supply these as either rigid or flexible sheets. Standard sheet sizes are 1000 x 1200 mm and 1000 x 2400 mm.

Thanks to mica’s natural plate-like structure, a mica sheet offers outstanding dielectric strength, thermal resistance, and chemical stability. At Elmelin, we add the high dielectric strength to the high thermal withstand. These properties make mica sheet insulation an excellent choice in demanding environments, especially when used as a reinforcing agent in sheet or board form.

Rigid mica sheets for furnaces and more

Rigid mica boards and sheets are highly valued for their ability to withstand extreme conditions. They are widely used in industrial furnace construction as well as in domestic appliances like hairdryers and toasters. Their ability to deliver reliable electrical insulation at high temperatures makes them essential wherever heat and electrical current intersect.

Rigid mica plates are especially suited for the construction phase of furnaces rather than for relining, thanks to their resistance to repeated high-temperature cycles. They are also commonly applied in electrically heated devices such as band heaters, tumble dryers and automatic toasters.

Rigid mica sheets come in two grades:

  • MR SSP with a heat resistance of 1200°C; and
  • MR SSM with a heat resistance of 1000°C.

Sheet thickness ranges between 0.10 and 50mm. Sheets are available in 1.2 m square or 2.4 m rectangular shapes.

We can also provide custom-cut shapes from rigid mica insulation sheets to meet specific requirements.

Flexible mica sheets

In sheet form, flexible mica provides a superior sheathing or covering, and can function as an insulation foil or separator in some applications.

As with rigid mica sheets, we provide a wide range of standard sizes. Flexible mica sheets come in thicknesses between 0.10 and 2mm, depending on the grade you require.

There are two grades of flexible mica sheet:

  • MF SSP – phlogopite mica; and
  • MF SSM – muscovite mica.

These rectangular mica sheets are available in 1020 mm widths and in various lengths.

Mica sheets for manufacturing solutions

As one of the most versatile insulating materials, mica sheet insulation is integral to modern manufacturing. Whether in foundries, furnaces, or domestic and industrial appliances, both rigid and flexible mica sheets provide the performance and safety needed for demanding operations.

If you have a manufacturing project, whether it is a foundry, a furnace, a domestic or industrial appliance, mica may just be the component you are missing.

Mica sheets for battery and automotive applications

With industries worldwide focusing on reducing carbon emissions, the role of energy storage and electric vehicles has never been more important. Specialised mica sheets help enhance both safety and performance in battery systems for automotive and power grid applications.

For example, our Compression Pads Plus combine mica with biosoluble insulation paper and silicone resin. This design creates a durable thermal barrier while also maintaining pressure inside battery packs. As cells age and swell, the consistent pressure helps retain charge and extend battery life – making mica a critical component in next-generation energy solutions.
